It has been under heritage protection since 1958, and since 2022 the maintenance of its city-centre section has been carried out in several phases, for which I provide technical supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Was the Stone Wall Built?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wall follows the former shoreline of Lake H\u00f3d, from Bocskai Street to the end of Tarj\u00e1n. Construction began on 4 June 1879 under the direction of architect S\u00e1muel Klein, with masonry contractors S\u00e1ndor Kov\u00e1cs and P\u00e1l Sulyok, and was completed in 1881. The bricks were manufactured at the Kov\u00e1cs brickworks. (Source: Wikipedia)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kofalvi-epitesziroda.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/novenyzettel-benove.jpg\" alt=\"The vegetation-covered section of the Stone Wall before the start of the works\" class=\"wp-image-1292\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The vegetation-covered section of the Stone Wall before the start of the works<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does Proper Maintenance Mean for a Listed Building?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the approximately 3-kilometre-long wall, the roughly 1.2-kilometre section in the city centre is being restored in several phases. The work begins with removing vegetation: roots growing into the wall can force apart the brickwork, so this is not merely an aesthetic issue, but an essential part of preserving the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kofalvi-epitesziroda.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/novenyzettol-megtisztitva.jpg\" alt=\"The wall section after the removal of vegetation\" class=\"wp-image-1293\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The wall section after the removal of vegetation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is followed by cleaning and sanding the surface, replacing missing and deteriorated bricks, and then applying a protective treatment.
